How to Organize Your Autumn-Themed Kitchen Decor

The month of October (or even early September depending on the weather) officially marks the beginning of autumn at home. We slowly enter the most beautiful and richest of seasons, especially in terms of cuisine. The changing light, the crisp and invigorating fresh morning air, the foliage of trees donning their golden and flamboyant coats, and the first chestnuts spotted on the ground confront us with the fait accompli. Autumn is here, but it is only ephemeral, so let’s embrace it wholeheartedly, hold onto it for a few weeks, and then let it retreat to make way for a more festive season.

In a kitchen, color should not be neglected! Whether it’s displayed on the walls, cabinets, countertop, central island, or furniture, it’s color that partly shapes the identity and atmosphere of this central room in the home. Whether you prefer a more subdued look, or on the contrary, you dream of a kitchen that makes a statement, discover the trendiest shades of the season for a beautiful, designer kitchen!

In autumn, it’s common for the warmest shades, associated with the changing nature of the season, to dominate decorative collections. Browns, orange hues, and terracotta remain, year after year, safe choices for warming up interiors as winter approaches. But this year, other more surprising shades are also part of the trends, and autumn promises to be quite colorful: notably, the grand return of charcoal black, sky blue, and red!

“Conversely, certain colors, seen too often and slightly out of fashion, are preparing to gradually leave our interiors: this is the case, for example, of duck blue, eggplant purple, mouse grey, and candy pink!”

  1. Add a touch of rustic charm to your jam jars.

From mid-summer and into autumn, it’s common to prepare jams and preserves with fruits and vegetables from the garden. This can be a cherished moment to share (like preparing Christmas cookies) and it’s especially a delicious way to preserve healthy produce and enjoy it throughout the winter. One might take on the task of designing labels to decorate the jars and containers, always with a rustic spirit. For some jam jars that will be devoured during the Halloween period, one could draw little witches on their brooms or spiders for children. For those destined for the Christmas period, it might be Christmas trees or snowmen…

A tip to make the jars prettier and give them a rustic country feel is to buy Liberty-style fabric or checkered cloth and cover the lid with linen string. This is a trick that often gets unanimous approval at home. For decoration, one can take a few jars of jam out of the cupboard and display them in a kitchen dresser with their little fabric hats. This gives an authentic touch that is generally quite pleasing.

  1. Display liqueurs or other culinary creations

Autumn is the season when people take the time to savor liqueurs made with fruits from the garden. One might choose bottles with a vintage look, and those displayed in the kitchen could be from the previous year. With homemade labels, these small bottles are charming and pleasantly rustic.

Blackberries are a popular fruit and can be enjoyed in many forms: in ice cream, crumble, jams, cakes… but also as a liqueur. A nice blackberry bush usually yields well (except for occasional years), and when there are enough berries for jam-making, one might turn to making liqueur. It’s a small pleasure that can be shared on weekends in the countryside, typically at the end of dinner in front of the fireplace. It can also be served after a long walk in the forest to reinvigorate the group (for adults, of course).

  1. Decorate the house with branches and other natural elements

Whether in your garden or while walking in the woods, take a basket and collect acorns, chestnuts, oak leaves, and maple leaves that you can arrange in the house. Gather pine cones and place them in metal bowls for a rustic effect, for example. You can also place dry branches (with a bit of lichen) in tall vases in autumn colors. I also collect some moss and wrap it around large candles or candleholders. And if I find tree bark on the ground, I pick up a few pieces to make a table centerpiece. Don’t forget ferns, which are coming back into fashion and add an interesting structure to your decor and bouquets.

One of my favorite decorations is to use large birch branches or trunks. They are beautiful and create a very warm atmosphere. You can make them stand upright or hang them from the ceiling with thick rustic twine and dangle a few elements or even add a small string of lights.

  1. Decorate with pumpkins, squashes, and gourds

In autumn, the choice of pumpkins, squashes, and gourds is quite wide, and it’s interesting to buy them in numbers to arrange them in groups. For example, you can place them in groups of three throughout the house, depending on their size, shape, and color (diversify the colors to take advantage of the beautiful palette of autumn shades – yellows, oranges, whites, reds, black, greens).

  1. Place seasonal fruits in pretty baskets or dishes

Why not use seasonal fruits like apples or pears? It’s a very simple and inexpensive decorating trick. Placed in beautiful salad bowls, fruit bowls, antique dishes, or baskets, these fruits add a lot of charm and give a rustic, country-style effect that is very attractive. The risk, as I’ve experienced, is forgetting to eat them!

6. Use seasonal tableware

One of my guilty pleasures in autumn is consuming a lot of cinnamon. So I prepare snacks with a good tea and small cinnamon rolls. To be completely in the mood, I serve them in mugs in the colors of the season. In the evening, it’s hot spiced cider. As for dishes with mushroom designs, they are ideal for the season, and you can find lovely plates decorated with deer or pheasants by bargain hunting. The blue tableware (on the left) is a bit spring-like, it’s true, but when combined with orange or yellow, it looks very nice on an autumn table.

7.Create a Cozy Coffee Corner

Set up a dedicated space in your kitchen with autumn-themed mugs, a selection of seasonal teas and coffees, and a small basket of cinnamon sticks and pumpkin spice. Add a warm-toned tablecloth and a few mini pumpkins or gourds for a festive touch. 🍂☕🎃

  1. Make small bouquets of hydrangeas or dahlias

Like dahlias, hydrangeas are among my favorite flowers. It’s so easy to create a simple and visually beautiful bouquet with a few flower heads, and why not add some asters or viburnum stems? Make a few small bouquets and place them around your home.

There are many varieties of hydrangeas, including some that are perfect for autumn with beautiful seasonal foliage.

  1. Get out the plaid aprons and tea towels!

Plaid aprons and tea towels remind me that we are in the middle of apple harvest season. … anything that reminds you of autumn has its place in your interior kitchen. If you can’t find interesting patterns, fall back on warm colors in shades of brick, curry or fir green.
